Sense8 : First Impressions

My brain hurts... Thanks Netflix

My First Impressions of The Wachowskis Sense8 on Netflix

Credit: Netflix

After watching the first episode of Netflixs' Sense8 it feels like I have brain freeze. What should I take to help my brain freeze?  I am not entirely sure yet whether it is the good kind or bad kind. I wasn't eating ice cream or having a delicious slushy of some sort, instead I was getting eye f**ked and mind f**ked from a streaming TV show. What should I take for my brain pain the red pill, blue pill or NZT? Okay sorry, just a little Matrix and Limitless reference because Sense8 definitely brought these movies to the fore front of my mind. (Since The Wachowskis', (Matrix) along with J. MIchael Straczynski (Babylon5) created Sense8.) Okay I am all about art and beautiful flashes of places from around the world. But really! The first episode got a bit dizzying that first 10 minutes.

On to background, at least as much as I can deem of show so far... The show starts off with Daryl Hannah in obvious pain or orgasm, I wasn't sure which at first lol. Then Naveen Andrews (Lost) shows up (YAY!) and he is talking some mumbo jumbo about her birthing something or someone and something about "born or unborn." We see as the audience she can hear him and maybe even feel him but he's not really there. I was kind of mind F-cked even this early to a degree except I had some type of idea from very little research that show is about eight strangers from around the world seemingly interconnected. As the viewer we don't know the hows or whys yet. So I had immediate theory of maybe Hannah and Andrews, (along with some white haired guy that shows up and threatens her), are possibly maybe part of the first set of "sensates." Anyways, Hannah is so upset by what is happening to her that she blows her head off and then we see her appear to the group of sensates in a ghost like vision where each of these eight people see her kill herself. If you are still with me at this point here is a brief rundown of where the characters live and the minimal descriptions of who they are merely based on the two episodes I've seen thus far...

There is Tuppence Middleton as a DJ in London, Brian J. Smith as a Chicago cop, Doona Bae as a underground kickboxer from Seoul, Ami Ameen playing a bus driver from Nairobi, Miguel Angel Silvestre as a Spanish actor from Mexico City, Jaime Clayton as a trans hactivist blogger from San Fransisco, Tina Desai as a Mubai scientist, and Max Riemelt as a safe breaker from Berlin. I have no idea exactly why or how these specific eight people in show are connected yet. Will they get to use one anothers abilities from being interconnected through their senses? I am not 100% sure yet as I haven't really dived in very far yet. We also see some brief flashes of some of the characters past so far, I'm not entirely sure yet how important that will be in the future episodes if at all.

Sense8 is pretty freaking cool visually but the dialogue seems to be lacking. I am not sure if the "sensates" have been unknowingly given some type of mind altering drug, is it all some type of a bigger government/law enforcement conspiracy? The few episodes I have seen they show all the 8 characters and I am not sure this is a great idea to feed the viewer all at once. I would personally rather the show give us two-four characters to focus on as the audience in more of an in depth way. I am getting lost with all the back and forth and it's making me not care much for any one specific character as you don't really get time to form some sort of connection as the viewer. Maybe some people may like that. I definitely am just starting to get bored. It's not even because of confusion as to what the hell is going on in general, it's more about not necessarily caring at this point as to where the mind-f--k may be headed. Even Naveen Andrews may not be able to save this one for me. (Though we barely see him in the show anyways.)

My Bottom Line: At the end of the day if you are willing to stick through this show then great. But I have come to the conclusion, even this early while trying to watch the third episode just now, that I just can't do it. I am not sure what flipped a switch for me as I kind of enjoyed the first episode.  I thought it would be refreshing to give something really different a shot. For me it was mainly that I couldn't connect or care enough about any of the characters, or really even be patient enough to find out the hows and whys of the sensates journey.

Have you tried watching Sense8, if so what are your first impressions?
